In good old 'murica fashion, we instead got a letter that the eclipse was NOT a valid reason to pull your kid from school, and would be considered an unlawful absence.

Back in my day we made barely usable “Eclipse Glasses” out of construction paper and then road home on our bikes with no helmet on.

My company had a meeting with us the other day to tell us they ordered glasses for everyone and we are allowed to stop working and watch the eclipse while it's happening. Probably over half my company has taken the day off and no truck lines are operating after 2 PM in our area. We should just shut down for the day.
